How To Use Search Engines
Use Keywords Just use the words you're interested in - you don't need to put words like 'in', 'the', 'a' etc, as nearly every webpage has these words in them anyway. Just remember to search for key words. If you want to find out how many characters there are in the chinese writing system for example, you would search for something like how many chinese characters (click here to search that on Google) Use Speech Marks If you want to search for something with more than one word like Mid Autumn Day the search engine will find pages with any of these words in it, for example a page that might say "Mid term break is on the first day of Autumn" - but obviously this page is not what you're looking for! The trick is to put speech marks around any sets of words that go together, so instead try searching for "Mid Autumn Day" - most search engines will only give you pages that have these three words together. As another example, if you wanted to find out about yum cha in Guangzhou, you would want the search engine to treat yum cha like one word together, and Guangzhou separately. So you would search like this: "yum cha" Guangzhou Use + and - To tell the search engine that a webpage MUST contain a word, put a + before the word. To tell the search engine that a webpage must NOT have a certain word in it, put a - before the word. For example, if you want to find pages about oranges, but don't want to know about apples, search for oranges -apples As another example, if you search for Guangzhou you get too many pages about travelling, and hotel deals! Instead, you can remove any pages about travel by search for Guangzhou -travel Happy searching! |
