How To Bargain

Bargain in Chinese Market
From my observation, unlike most Chinese people will do, many westerners don't like to bargain so much. I tried to find out the reason and talked to some western friends and they told me that they're just not used to bargaining, or just not bothered to.

It is fine no matter if you bargain or not when you try to buy something because you can still buy it if you want to, but with bargaining, you can have a better deal all the time and why not buy the same thing for a better price, right? So here I will suggest some good ways to bargain from my own experience:

Key Point 1. Try to get as much information as you can before you go to buy something. But when you are talking with the dealer or a sales person, even though you don't really know much about this product, never let them know that you don't, just pretend that you do!

Key Point 2. Never say that they have the best price. Even though they are cheaper than the other stores, you should always say: "Hmm, it's still overpriced..."

Key Point 3. Be confident. Confidence is actually important for doing almost everything. So to show your confidence during the talking will be very helpful. The sales person is not going to lower the prize at all if you aren't acting confidently.

Key Point 4. Show the seller that you can buy it somewhere else, but you would like to buy it from him or her right now if it's a good deal.

Key Point 5. Don't believe everything you hear. Remember that you shouldn't believe everything that you will hear from a dealer or sales person, it doesn't mean that they like to lie, but you can imagine that if you were trying to sell something, you may want to make it sound as good as you can!

Key Point 6. Don't be afraid to tell them the price you want. In many cases, the dealer or sales person will ask you: "So what is the price in your mind?" Don't be afraid, just try to say the price that you think is good because you will never know what will happen and you may get a surprise answer. But even they if they say: "Wow, that's way too low, I can't even buy it for that..." Then you say: "I am just telling you that's the price I think this product is really worth, not that I think it's the fact..."

There are many more things to pay attention to, but you can really understand them by trying it out and practising more. So for the learners, just try to be nice, but be confident and be active.

I personally like to bargain a lot if it's a suitable place to do so, for example when I went to buy a computer, car, or almost anything in China etc. I think to bargain, the most important point isn't even because it can save you money, but also to learn and to gain communication skills and to practise your quick thinking. So bargaining is like an art, not bad to try it if you want. Good Luck : )!
