Auckland is the city of Sails. I have lived in Auckland for more than a year now, and yesterday I finally went sailing for the first time.
Let me summarise the two things that I remember the most from this first time sailing experience. They are:
First, there are a lot of different lengths, colours and styles of rope on the yacht to help tie stuff.
Second, when we are sailing, we will always remember to check the side and the strength of the wind and always remember to check the depth when we are not sailing in the open sea yet.
In one stage we were only 0.2 meters from the bottom of the yacht to the bottom of the river and then the yacht stopped (but it wasn’t me who was sailing then!!!). We almost got stuck there, but thanks to experience the other people have we could keep going after about 20 minutes.
The feeling was so different with doing the other things. I don’t need a license to sail and there are no roads. It’s very open and is especially fun when the other boats or ships pass by. After they pass the bigger boats leave huge waves and the yacht sways a lot and almost feels like tipping over to me. But the good thing is that I didn’t fall into the sea.
Unfortunately, I did get quite wet today because the weather turned bad later and I was outside for quite a while.
In conclusion, it was very exciting and fun. I am looking forward to going again sometime. I really think that I will do even better next time, and, I will try not to make myself so wet : ) !
